What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common eye condition that causes inflammation of the eyelid margins, the area where the eyelashes grow. It can make the eyes feel sore, gritty, or itchy, and often leads to redness, crusting, or flakes along the lashes. In many cases, the condition is linked to blocked oil glands (meibomian glands) or an overgrowth of skin bacteria that disturb the delicate balance of the eyelid’s surface.

While Blepharitis isn’t usually sight-threatening, it can be persistent and uncomfortable without proper care. Symptoms often come and go, becoming worse in the morning or after screen use. At My-iClinic, we use advanced diagnostic tools to identify the type and cause of Blepharitis, whether anterior (affecting the lash line) or posterior (involving the oil glands) and tailor an effective treatment plan to restore eyelid health and long-term comfort.

Diagnosis, treatment & management

Diagnosis begins with a detailed examination of the eyelids and lashes under magnification to assess the level of inflammation, gland function, and debris along the lash line. At My-iClinic, advanced imaging such as meibography can also be used to evaluate the meibomian glands, helping us identify whether the condition is bacterial, gland-related, or associated with other eye surface problems like dry eye.

Treatment focuses on restoring eyelid hygiene and controlling inflammation. This may include warm compresses, lid massage, and gentle cleansing to remove bacteria and unblock oil glands. In some cases, prescription antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drops are recommended to target the root cause. Long-term management often involves maintaining a simple daily care routine to prevent flare-ups. With consistent treatment, most patients achieve lasting relief, clearer eyes, and improved comfort throughout the day.

SIGNS & TREATMENT

Blepharitis can develop gradually and often feels like recurring irritation or “tired” eyes. Recognising the key signs early helps prevent long-term discomfort and more serious complications such as styes or dry eye.

Advanced Diagnostics At My-iClinic

Red, itchy, or crusty eyelids can be more than simple irritation, they often signal Blepharitis, a chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins. Use the guide below to recognise common symptoms, understand their causes, and learn the best next step from home care and routine cleaning to specialist treatment at My-iClinic.

Blepharitis; What Your Symptoms Are Telling You

Use this quick guide to match your symptoms with likely causes, understand how they affect your eyes, and choose the best next step toward long-term relief.

Scenario What It Might Be How It Affects Your Eyes What To Do Now Common Assessments Typical Treatments / Outcomes
Mild flakes or crusts on lashes, worse in the morning Anterior Blepharitis (debris and bacteria at lash line) Itchy, tired-looking eyes; occasional redness or irritation Begin daily warm compresses and lid cleaning; book a check if persistent Slit-lamp exam of lid margins, lash debris inspection Lid hygiene routine; symptoms often improve within weeks
Ongoing red, sore lids with frequent flare-ups Chronic Blepharitis; bacterial or seborrhoeic component Persistent discomfort, cosmetic concern, recurrent irritation Book a specialist assessment for tailored treatment plan Lid margin imaging, skin condition review, tear film evaluation Targeted lid cleansers, topical treatment; long-term control with routine care
Burning, stinging, or frothy tears with greasy lid margins Posterior Blepharitis / Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Unstable tear film, dry eye symptoms, blurry vision Arrange Blepharitis and dry eye clinic review Meibography, gland expression, tear quality testing Heat therapy, gland expression, lubricants; more comfortable, stable eyes
Frequent styes or small lumps on the eyelids Blocked meibomian glands linked to Blepharitis Localised swelling, tenderness, cosmetic concern Seek assessment; early treatment prevents recurrence and scarring Lid exam, gland evaluation, infection check Warm compresses, topical/ oral treatment; minor procedure if persistent
Gritty, watery, or light-sensitive eyes plus crusty lids Blepharitis associated with dry eye disease Blurred vision, fluctuating comfort throughout the day Book combined Blepharitis and dry eye evaluation Tear film analysis, gland imaging, surface staining Integrated plan: lid care + tear support; clearly more stable, comfortable eyes
Severe pain, marked swelling, loss of lashes, or vision change Possible infection, ulceration, or other eyelid/ocular surface disease Higher risk situation; needs prompt expert review Contact an eye specialist or urgent eye clinic without delay Comprehensive slit-lamp exam, cultures or imaging if needed Targeted medication and close follow-up; protects the eye and lid structure
This guide is informational and does not replace a full eye examination. If your eyelids remain red, crusty, sore, or your vision changes, a specialist Blepharitis assessment at My-iClinic can confirm the cause and provide a personalised treatment plan.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding care from start to finish I am writing this review on behalf of Mr. Alan Nathan Gershon (Mr G), whom I care for. At 95 years old, he attended myiClinic London on 12 August 2026 for a YAG laser procedure, which was initially planned for his left eye only. From the moment we arrived, every member of staff was welcoming, kind, respectful, and professional. We were treated with genuine care and dignity throughout our visit. A special thank you goes to Ms. Bola Odufuwa-Bolger, the Clinic Director and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. Her patient-centred approach was exceptional. During the assessment, she carefully discovered that although Mr. G's left eye had the thicker after-cataract, his right eye was also affected. The procedure took much longer than expected, but she remained patient, meticulous, and determined to achieve the best possible outcome. After the procedure, she felt the left eye might need to be redone. However, by the very next day, Mr. G's eyesight had improved remarkably. He now enjoys a renewed lease of vision—he can even read without his prescription glasses, something that has made an enormous difference to his quality of life. We are also incredibly grateful to Catalina Tomulescu, the Ophthalmic Technician, whose kindness and support were wonderful, as well as every member of the team who cared for Mr. G. As his carer, I left feeling humbled by the compassion, respect, and professionalism shown to us. Mr. G is deeply thankful for everything the myiClinic team has done. Thank you all for your outstanding work—please keep doing what you're doing. You have given a 95-year-old gentleman the priceless gift of seeing the world more clearly again.

My-iClinic in Whetstone, North London is, quite simply, the best. I went there for a bilateral cataract procedure, and the surgical team's depth of technical expertise, professionalism, care and empathy are all beyond compare. The results speak for themselves, but I will also do so anyway: following the procedure, I now have vision better than at any point in my life to date, even with contacts. All my thanks go to Bola and her team. My advice: if you have vision issues, do not waste your time going anywhere else- go to My-iClinic and say I sent you!!

Blepharitis FAQs

Blepharitis is one of the most common causes of eyelid irritation and discomfort, yet many people don’t realise how easily it can be managed with the right care. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about what causes it, how it’s treated, and what you can do to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.

No! It’s not about being unclean. Blepharitis is usually linked to blocked oil glands or a natural overgrowth of bacteria on the eyelid margins. Daily eyelid cleaning simply helps to restore the natural balance and prevent flare-ups.

Yes. When the eyelid margins become inflamed, the tear film can become unstable. This leads to blurred or fluctuating vision, especially after reading, computer use, or long periods of concentration.

No! Blepharitis isn’t an infection that spreads from person to person. It’s a chronic condition related to how your eyelids and oil glands function, though bacteria can sometimes make symptoms worse.

Anterior Blepharitis affects the outer edge of the eyelids and lashes, often with visible flakes or crusting. Posterior Blepharitis involves the inner eyelid and meibomian glands, leading to oily tears, dryness, or irritation. Many patients experience a combination of both.

With consistent eyelid cleaning, warm compresses, and any prescribed drops or ointments, most patients notice improvement within a few weeks. However, long-term care is key; regular maintenance helps keep symptoms under control.

Yes, Blepharitis can return if daily lid care lapses, as the condition tends to be chronic. Think of it like skincare for your eyes; gentle, consistent care keeps the lids clean, the glands clear, and flare-ups to a minimum.
