What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Healthy tears are vital for keeping the surface of your eyes smooth, clear, and protected from infection. When this delicate balance is disrupted, it can lead to dryness, irritation, redness, and a gritty or burning sensation. Some people also experience excessive watering as the eyes try to compensate for the lack of moisture.

Dry eye can be triggered by a variety of factors, including ageing, screen use, contact lenses, hormonal changes, certain medications, and environmental conditions like air conditioning or wind. At My-iClinic, we use advanced diagnostic tools to identify the underlying cause whether it’s tear gland dysfunction, meibomian gland blockage, or inflammation and create a treatment plan designed to restore comfort and protect long-term eye health.

Diagnosis, treatment & management

Diagnosis begins with a detailed eye examination to understand what’s causing your symptoms. At My-iClinic, we use advanced diagnostic technology; including tear film analysis, meibography, and osmolarity testing to assess tear quality, quantity, and gland function. This allows us to pinpoint the exact type of dry eye, whether it’s evaporative, aqueous-deficient, or a combination of both.

Treatment is then tailored to each patient. This may include medicated eye drops, tear film stabilisers, or in-office procedures to unclog blocked meibomian glands and restore natural tear flow. Lifestyle guidance is also an important part of management from adjusting screen habits and improving hydration to using humidifiers or omega-3 supplements. With regular follow-ups, we help patients achieve long-term relief, healthier tear balance, and lasting protection for the surface of the eye.

SIGNS & TREATMENT

Dry eye can develop gradually, often starting with mild irritation before progressing to more persistent discomfort. Recognising the early signs makes it easier to treat and prevent long-term damage to the eye surface.

Advanced Diagnostics At My-iClinic

Persistent dryness, irritation, or watery eyes can signal an underlying tear imbalance or gland dysfunction. Use the guide below to understand common causes, learn when to seek specialist care, and discover the safest next step — from simple home remedies to advanced clinical treatment.

Dry Eye; What Your Symptoms Really Mean

Use this quick guide to match your symptoms with likely causes, see how they affect comfort and clarity, and choose the best next step for long-term relief.

Scenario What It Might Be How It Affects Your Eyes What To Do Now Common Assessments Typical Treatments / Outcomes
Dry, gritty eyes after long screen use Reduced blink rate, unstable tear film Tired, sore eyes; fluctuating vision that clears when you blink Try regular breaks, conscious blinking and good lighting; book an assessment if persistent Tear break-up time, surface staining, lifestyle review Lubricating drops, screen-habit coaching; usually rapid improvement with simple changes
Burning or stinging in air-conditioned, windy or dry rooms Evaporative dry eye; thin or poor-quality tear film Irritation, light sensitivity, difficulty wearing contact lenses Arrange a dry eye clinic review to check tear film and meibomian glands Meibography, oil gland function, tear osmolarity Warm compresses, gland expression, targeted drops; long-term comfort with tailored plan
Eyes that water constantly but still feel dry or sore Reflex tearing due to underlying dryness or inflammation Blurred vision, irritation, tearing in wind or cold Book an assessment; over-the-counter drops alone rarely fix the root cause Tear meniscus height, lid margin evaluation, dye tests Anti-inflammatory drops, gland treatment; more stable, comfortable tear film
Very dry or sticky eyes first thing in the morning Nocturnal lagophthalmos (incomplete lid closure) or tear deficiency Sore, blurred vision on waking that eases slowly Arrange review to check lid closure and tear volume Lid closure assessment, Schirmer test, corneal staining Night-time gel/ointments, moisture shields; protects surface overnight
Contact lenses feel uncomfortable or “scratchy” Lens-induced dryness or meibomian gland issues Reduced wear time, red eyes, lens intolerance Book a specialist review; avoid pushing through discomfort Tear quality check, lens fit review, lid health assessment Change in lens type, tear support, gland therapy; more comfortable, safer wear
Severe dryness with intense pain, light sensitivity or sudden vision drop Possible severe ocular surface disease, infection, or corneal damage High risk of corneal injury; needs urgent attention Same-day urgent eye clinic or emergency assessment Slit-lamp exam, staining patterns, corneal integrity checks Intensive lubrication, prescription drops, protective treatments to safeguard vision
This guide is informational and not a diagnosis. If dry eye symptoms persist, interrupt your daily life, or are linked with pain or vision changes, a dedicated dry eye assessment at My-iClinic can identify the cause and create a personalised treatment plan.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding care from start to finish I am writing this review on behalf of Mr. Alan Nathan Gershon (Mr G), whom I care for. At 95 years old, he attended myiClinic London on 12 August 2026 for a YAG laser procedure, which was initially planned for his left eye only. From the moment we arrived, every member of staff was welcoming, kind, respectful, and professional. We were treated with genuine care and dignity throughout our visit. A special thank you goes to Ms. Bola Odufuwa-Bolger, the Clinic Director and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. Her patient-centred approach was exceptional. During the assessment, she carefully discovered that although Mr. G's left eye had the thicker after-cataract, his right eye was also affected. The procedure took much longer than expected, but she remained patient, meticulous, and determined to achieve the best possible outcome. After the procedure, she felt the left eye might need to be redone. However, by the very next day, Mr. G's eyesight had improved remarkably. He now enjoys a renewed lease of vision—he can even read without his prescription glasses, something that has made an enormous difference to his quality of life. We are also incredibly grateful to Catalina Tomulescu, the Ophthalmic Technician, whose kindness and support were wonderful, as well as every member of the team who cared for Mr. G. As his carer, I left feeling humbled by the compassion, respect, and professionalism shown to us. Mr. G is deeply thankful for everything the myiClinic team has done. Thank you all for your outstanding work—please keep doing what you're doing. You have given a 95-year-old gentleman the priceless gift of seeing the world more clearly again.

My-iClinic in Whetstone, North London is, quite simply, the best. I went there for a bilateral cataract procedure, and the surgical team's depth of technical expertise, professionalism, care and empathy are all beyond compare. The results speak for themselves, but I will also do so anyway: following the procedure, I now have vision better than at any point in my life to date, even with contacts. All my thanks go to Bola and her team. My advice: if you have vision issues, do not waste your time going anywhere else- go to My-iClinic and say I sent you!!

Dry Eye FAQs

Dry eye is one of the most common and misunderstood eye conditions. Many patients live with symptoms for years, assuming discomfort is normal. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about causes, treatment options, and what to expect from modern dry eye care.

This is a classic sign of tear film imbalance. When the eyes become too dry, they trigger overproduction of poor-quality reflex tears. These watery tears don’t lubricate properly, leading to both dryness and excessive tearing.

Yes. When the tear film is unstable, it disrupts the smooth optical surface of the cornea, causing vision to blur or fluctuate. Blinking may briefly restore clarity, but sustained blurring is a sign the tear layer needs support.

Treatment depends on the cause. My-iClinic offers advanced diagnostic testing to identify whether your dryness is evaporative or gland-related, then tailors solutions such as prescription eye drops, heat therapy, meibomian gland treatment, or tear film stabilisers.

Many patients feel relief within days, but full improvement often develops over several weeks as tear quality stabilises. For chronic cases, ongoing management keeps symptoms under control and prevents flare-ups.

Absolutely. Simple adjustments, like taking screen breaks, staying hydrated, using humidifiers, and eating omega-3 rich foods can significantly improve tear film stability and comfort, especially when combined with clinical care.

Not always, but it often requires long-term attention. Some people experience dry eye temporarily due to environment, contact lens wear, or medication, while others develop chronic forms linked to gland dysfunction or ageing. With proper management, symptoms can be controlled effectively for lasting comfort and clear vision.
