WHAT IS MACULA DEGENERATION?
Degeneration of the macula is a age-related condition affecting the retina at the line of sight. In its severest forms it can prevent patient from reading and driving. It can also prevent enjoyment of television as it blocks the vision in the centre. It exists in 2 main forms, wet and dry. The wet form is treatable with injections into the eye of a drug that blocks the disease. Successful treatment usually preserves vision but often has to be repeated many times. The dry form has currently no treatment but tends to be less damaging.
The disease is most easily diagnosed by a scanning device which allows detailed visualisation of the retina at the centre of the eye. This scan is carried out while the patient looks at a small blue light and is completely non-invasive. It gives clear view of all the layers of the retina and allows accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. It also allows careful monitoring of the patient’s condition to ensure that treatment has been successful.
Wet macular degeneration is now treatable. Injection of a special drug into the jelly of the eye helps to preserve the patient’s vision in most cases.
