LASEK & PRK laser eye surgery

Well-known for being the first generation of laser eye procedures, LASEK & PRK surgery is chosen very occasionally in very special scenarios to correct conditions such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Dating back to the 1980s, thousands of patients have been successfully treated using LASEK & PRK prior to the invention of LASIK. However, due to recent medical advancements, ReLEx SMILE is now usually the preferred option for people wanting normal vision without glasses or contacts.

When you choose My iClinic, the laser specialist will choose the best option for your eyes so you can guarantee that your eyesight will be in the best hands thanks to our highly-experienced ophthalmologists. We will be committed to working with you to find the best procedure for your needs – transforming your eyesight for the better.

What is LASEK & PRK?

LASEK & PRK are notable for being treatments performed on the surface of the cornea. During the procedure, your laser eye surgeon will remove the highest surface layer at the front of your eye before reshaping the tissue underneath the cornea using a laser.

Both of these surface-level procedures offer similar results – the only difference between them being the way the top layer of cells on your eye is removed by your surgeon.

How does LASEK & PRK work?

As laser eye surgery must be tailored to each patient’s prescription with complete accuracy, the team at My iClinic use precise algorithms to program a laser to help you see clearly without glasses or contacts.

Although almost identical procedures, LASEK & PRK only differ in the way the highest layer of the cornea is removed. In LASEK surgery, the top layer of cells are simply moved to one side and replaced after surgery, whereas the PRK surgery removes them completely. This is done using a dilute alcohol solution.

Both procedures then use a laser to reshape the tissue on the surface of the eye to achieve clear vision. Once this is complete, you will need to wear a protective bandage lens for five days until the healing process is complete.

These surgeries provide an excellent option for those with specific optical conditions including thin corneas. Both procedures are also popular with those who play high-impact sports and also people in the armed forces.

To find out if LASEK & PRK surgery is right for you, we will offer you a consultation in which we will advise you on which laser procedure is best for you. Usually, when either of these procedures are recommended, it means that there is something more unusual in your condition that wouldn’t be effectively corrected by LASIK.

LASEK & PRK are very accurate in restoring normal vision. Once both procedures are complete, you will be asked to wear a protective bandage for around five days after treatment. There can be some haze initially, but eventually, this clears.

As LASEK & PRK are somewhat more uncomfortable than LASIK, it’s important to get as much rest as possible for the next week. We recommend avoiding work during this time as well as strenuous contact sports. You will also need daily eye drops and an eyepatch whilst sleeping in order to prevent dryness or irritation.

You will also be offered a one-month follow-up exam so that your surgeon can monitor the results of your procedure.

Really pleased with the outcome of my lens replacement in one eye and laser surgery in other eye, carried out by Dr John Bolger and his colleagues. Wonderful not to have to rely on glasses all the time, just for small print. I was nervous before attending the clinic, but felt reassured and confident in their ability to improve my vision and reduce my need for glasses all the time. The testing, surgery and after care were first class, all carried out in a caring and professional manner and I would not hesitate to recommend this clinic.

I was recommended to My-iClinic by a consultant ophthalmic surgeon……he said it was the only place to go for laser vision correction………and I think he was absolutely right! John Bolger and his team are all, without exception, a pleasure to deal with and they are all professional, informative and assuring. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them……the aftercare is outstanding too……and even better….I can see!!

Have been dreaming about laser eye surgery since I was 15. Can’t believe that my eyes can actually see right now without contacts, woow. Will recommend your clinic to all of my friends. Mr. Bolger is the best.
